Rachel Murray is a textiles graduate from last year’s class of 2011 from Manchester Metropolitan University and has since completed her MA in Contemporary Craft. Her work focuses on hand-made British knitted accessories using unique techniques and locally sourced yarns to construct authentic fabrics.

“To recall a place or memory through the language of constructed textiles is a key element to my making process and a strong aesthetic aspect within my practice. Each accessory is designed to be interpreted by each individual, to be a worn portable memory and a decoration for the home environment.”

“I completed a BA Textiles degree, specialising in knit, at Manchester Metropolitan University in 2011. I went on to study for a MA in Design, specialising in Contemporary Craft, at MMU which I will complete September 2012. Here I refined what I learnt during my BA, spending one year developing my collections and understanding of the language of my materials to create wearable accessories, to enable myself to become a professional knitwear designer. I always found great inspiration in taking myself to new spaces and places, discovering wondrous things in unexpected places and opening your eyes to the world around you. British seascapes have been a great source for my work and I have always thrived on interpreting this creatively through photography and making. I adore Art Nouveau, the Pre-Raphaelites and Greek Mythology, and these have been a constant inspiration.”

“My career path is not completely defined as I am open to develop and refine my practice as I work. I do want to continue to make connections with the industry as a selling designer, reaching a wider audience with my textiles and ultimately become a make professionally. I will be exhibiting at my MA degree show at Cube Gallery (27th Sep-5th Oct), Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair (4th-7th Oct) and Made By Hand (30th Nov-2nd Dec).”
